Reflection:
This assignment was a real insight for me into a different way of completing the research process. I really enjoyed finding a topic that really appealed to me and being appeal to complete the I-Search process with it. When I later began teaching language arts, this assignment was one that I used often to teach the research process and the students really enjoyed it too. In addition, when I was teaching and completing my master’s, I showed this process to other language arts teachers who were really excited to learn about it. One important aspect is allowing choice in the research process. If we consistently force our students to research what we want rather than what they want, they begin to rebel and become bored with the process.
As a school library media specialist, I will utilize this process as I teach students research methods and lessons. I do wonder if I will have a difficult time convincing teachers that it is an effective way to research, even if my colleagues liked it before. There is a difference between liking the process and actually straying from conventional methods that they are used to using and embracing the I-Search. If I can help both teachers see how important it is for students to develop critical thinking skills that the I-search requires, my argument for using this process will go a long way. Critical thinking skills will certainly aid students on the all-important standardized test also.

Reflection:
This assignment was a group project that attempted to align the objectives of one of our schools, a technical/vocational high school. Our objectives were as follows:
1. Resources and materials should enhance the curriculum map and provide supplement to the education plan and AKS requirements for the school’s education program. 2. The resources should be accessible and understandable to students with various interests and learning abilities. 3. A variety of resources should be chosen, taking into consideration the wide range of teaching and learning styles that are present in the school. 4. Materials should provide students with varying levels of difficulty and a presentation of different points of view. 5. Materials chosen should help students develop critical thinking skills.
The focus of our order was to: · Purchase media and professional materials to assist in curriculum enrichment for class instructional delivery and technology integration · Purchase appropriate supplemental materials to support the Graphics Arts, Cosmetology, and Early Childhood Education programs at Maxwell High School. To complete this assignment, our group studied the objectives of the school and produced an order process checklist, replicated an authentic order, and designed a presentation meant to show a media committee. This assignment has already been a valuable asset to me in my job as a media specialist.

Reflection:
The PDEP was a comprehensive project that had us design a hypothetical plan for a media center. This was a group project that allowed us all to participate in the production, and was definitely a group effort. With this project, we group described both our school make-up and our media center. We outlined our philosophy and our mission statement for the media center. We also developed annual objectives for the media center and created a budget for the library based on our objectives. In addition, we described the roles and responsibilities of media center staff and the media committee members. Finally, we developed a plan to evaluate our objectives that we created.
The PDEP project gave me huge insight into the role of the media specialist and my role as a program administrator in the media center. As a result of this project, I understand how to formulate a plan based on the school’s curriculum and needs. I can also create objectives and develop a budget designed to support these objectives. And, I understand how to evaluate the plan on a yearly basis to make sure that objectives are being met while still aligning to the school’s needs. |

Reflection:
This was one of the first projects that I completed, before I was even teaching in a school. It was challenging to me to get into the mindset of an educator, but it really helped me see the role of the media specialist. It helped me understand that the media specialist has the unique position of assisting teachers in how they teach. It also helped me understand how I can integrate information literacy standards into lesson plans.
In my previous jobs, before teaching, I was a project manager. My job was to work with different departments and get their input into marketing plans that I was creating. As a result, I feel that collaboration is one of my strengths, and I can use my experience in this matter.

Reflection:
My internship has been extremely helpful. My mentor is a great media specialist, winning Teacher of the Year as both a media specialist and a teacher. She was able to give me great insight into how to run a media center effectively. During my internship, I have been able to teach information literacy lessons, promote reading by planning a book fair, align lessons to Georgia Performance Standards, assist individual students with book selection, visit middle and high school media centers, and continue ordering and cataloging books and materials for the school’s supplies. I learned so much, I can’t even explain how helpful it was. I think that the internship was possibly the most valuable aspect of the program, because I was able to gain wonderful hands-on experience.

Reflection:
The Reading and Literacy Project was a great way to develop a plan to encourage our students to read. The plan that my group developed was for my actual school, and is one that I plan to use. We chose to have a weekly drawing for students to go on the morning show and give a book talk about his or her favorite book, audiobook or movie. It was very helpful to see all the aspects of developing this plan, including taking into account the school’s mission and objectives and considering our special needs population. I now realize that there is a lot of work that goes into developing a promotion or plan to jump start reading and literacy!

Reflection:
In our selection policy, we developed the following criteria for selecting materials:
(Adapted from American Library Association, 1998) In addition, we developed criteria for our media committee, a process for challenges, weeding and intellectual freedom. To me, this project really laid the groundwork for everything I am now doing as a media specialist.
